Tawaki Penguin

Tawaki Penguin

This collage is the January image in my 2024 wall calendar focused on migratory birds of the world.  Fiordland Penguins, known as Tawaki, travel between 3,500 and 6,800 km in their 69-day migration from their breeding sites on the west coast of New Zealand to feeding grounds south of Tasmania. This is one of the longest penguin migrations in the world. The birds travel between 20 km and 80 km per day – which may be close to the upper limit for penguin swimming.  This collage includes the William Wordsworth quote “Ocean is a mighty harmonist.”
