Queen Retinue

Queen Retinue
This mixed media collage is part of a honeybee collection completed in 2023 inspired of my latest hobby – beekeeping! Everyone believes that the queen bee is the boss of the hive. And in many ways, this is true. She maintains the colony by continuously laying eggs and creating a united family with her pheromones. In turn, worker bees support her with a constantly rotating retinue of caretakers cleaning, feeding, and spreading her pheromones throughout the colony. However, if the workers sense that the queen is failing, they will rear a new queen to replace her. Each bee knows she is part of a larger organism – the colony. When she cares for her sisters, she cares for herself. Bees teach us that “When women support each other, incredible things can happen.”
